A Travellerspoint blog

It's the final countdown....

sunny 20 °C

Oh my gosh. I remember writing my first blog post 8 months ago. Where did the time go???

Hope you enjoy the last installment!

LA

5th Jan

Shopping! We drove all the way to Camarillo Premium outlets which is a 45 min drive from Van Nuys. We passed Calabasas on the way and I spotted Kim Kardashian driving around (jokes).

This place was huge and we were there for 5 hrs and only covered 1/3 of the place! Lots of bargains though!

We also found out today that Lidia had managed to get us tickets to Ellen for Thursday - super excited!!!

Santa Barbara

6th Jan

Road trip to Santa Barbara which is only a 1 hr 15 min drive from LA. The drive was spectacular along the coast. It's supposed to be winter here but it sure feels like summer!

The amazing views on our road trip...

Santa Barbara is beautiful! We walked along the ocean front and pier where we saw about 8 dolphins swimming - so amazing! We then enjoyed a lovely lunch in the sunshine before checking into our motel.

Dinner in the old town which is really cute! Love it here.

7th Jan

We were supposed to head back to LA today BUT we decided to stay another night in Santa Barbara ;-).

We slept in and lazed about watching tv all morning and then headed out into the glorious sunshine (it's about 30 degrees today)!

Santa Barbara is gorgeous. We spent the afternoon exploring, had some lunch then Yuri got a massage while I got a mani and pedi!

The sky as the sun was setting was magical so we drove up to the Santa Barbara mission to take some photos.

8th Jan

We headed back to LA in the morning after a ridiculously big breakfast at Denny's.

Crazy beautiful drive home...

Lidia had worked her magic and somehow got us VIP tickets to The Ellen Show! We got to Warner Bros Studios about 4:30 pm and were ushered into the riff raff room for a while and then taken inside the studio! So so cool to be there and we had really great seats. There was a guy out the front warming us up for a bit and then all of a sudden Ellen was walking out and the show was starting. First guest was Kayley Cuoco-Sweeting which was awesome because we both love The Big Bang Theory! Next was Melissa McCarthy! She is hilarious! We had so much fun. Danced our asses off and laughed a hell of a lot. Awesome, awesome day!

9th Jan

Today was a big, big day of... Shopping!!!! 12 till 9 pm on our feet (spending up big though so I can't complain too much)! We headed to some outlets and everything was so ridiculously cheap. After wearing the same clothes literally day in and day out for 8 months, it's so nice to buy new clothes! Oh and why do we pay SO much in Australia for everything????

10th Jan

LA is finally getting some much needed rain so we had a fairly lazy day in catching up with Lidia and Raul, sorting out luggage and watching TV. Super lazy!

11th Jan

More shopping! Hope we can fit it all in the suitcases! We are now up to 4 suitcases, we've had to pay for 2 extra!

12th Jan

Disneyland!

What a fun day acting like kids again! This really is the happiest place on earth!

I'll let the photos do the talking!

We also found out we're famous while we were there! Messages streaming in from Australia to say we had been spotted on the Ellen show - awesome!

13th Jan

Grand Central Market for lunch which was super yummy. We saw some filming for a movie or TV show while we were walking about - cool! We then headed to Hollywood. Hollywood Blvd was partially closed, manned by police so not sure what was going on there!?!

Last supper with Raul and Lidia in the evening. AMAZING people that we can't thank enough for all the hospitality they have shown us - WOW! Sometimes thank you just isn't enough...

14th Jan

One more sleep till we fly home!

Feeling nervous and excited, cannot wait to see our peeps!

We spent the day packing then dinner at home with Raul and Lidia....

So now that it's all over, how do we feel?

Incredibly grateful, blessed and happy. Most of all we feel lucky! We traveled the world for 8 months and I know that it's hard for some to take even just a 1 week holiday.

We visited 8 countries (30 cities), made new friends, spent time with old friends, saw unbelievable things with our own eyes and enjoyed EVERY SINGLE MOMENT!

We started on the 3rd May in London then flew over to Argentina (oh how we love this country), World Cup in Brazil (what an experience), first time in Colombia (wow), El Salvador with Yuri's parents (priceless), Mexico with Yuri's parents (priceless), and then on our own (Mexico, you have our hearts), Cuba (what an experience) and the USA (back to the "western world" and we loved every single second)!

I have to thank my gorgeous husband and partner in crime, Yuri (aka Babe)! Our third long haul trip and by far the most memorable I think. THANK YOU!

Thanks also to everyone that read this blog and liked our photos, I know I was jamming up everyone's newsfeed!

Until the next adventure, that's all folks!

San Fran just keeps on wowing us!

sunny

Not entirely sure if "wowing" is actually a word but it just suits our time in San Francisco to a tee! What an amazing city that has given us family, friends, amazing views, delicious wine and the list just keeps on going!

24th December

Christmas Eve!

We took it super easy today. Supermarket, washing, out for lunch and then had an afternoon nap (haven't done that in ages)!

Phone calls home for Christmas which was hard as it makes us miss home that little bit more being away at this time of the year. Nevertheless, it's always awesome to speak to our loved ones!

25th December

Merry Christmas!

Wishing all of our family and friends a wonderful, wonderful Christmas!

MerryChristmas3D2700.jpg

What a glorious, sunny day in San Francisco! We spent the morning at Golden Gate park which is simply stunning!

photo_3__53_.jpg

Back home for lunch and to crack open the champagne!

Breaking Bad marathon after that - pretty awesome Christmas just the two of us!

26th December

Awesome day!

Bus into town to meet up with Tia Annie. We had a farewell lunch at The Cheesecake Factory at the top of the Macy's building at Union Square. Great views, food and company! We had such a good laugh. Tia Annie is leaving for El Salvador on Sunday so this is the last time we'll see her....

33B57F219E43AF1DC4779CFA2FCA5302.jpg

Mario and Felisha were so awesome to drive over 2hrs from Sacramento into the city to catch up with us (thanks guys)! We went for dinner and drinks at the coolest little place called Tonight Soju Bar. Wasn't so sure about Asian tapas but is was soooo good! Cocktails that came in watermelon and pineapple casing over dry ice? Even cooler! It was so awesome to catch up and we had a good laugh!

90_photo_2__57_.jpg

After that they drove us up to Twin Peaks to see the amazing views - San Francisco is truly beautiful. Then we drove to Treasure Island to get some equally beautiful views from a different angle.

Last stop was for Ice Cream at Mitchell's - yum!

Great, great day!

27th December

Full on but awesome day!

We took a tour to Muir Woods and Sausalito which was awesome!

We met the tour group at the Ferry building and took a ferry over to Sausalito and then jumped on a shuttle bus there which drove us to Muir Woods. The drive was breathtaking!

Muir Woods is a National Monument rather than a national park. Why, I hear you ask?

"Before the logging industry came to California, there were an estimated 2 million acres (8,000 km2) of old growth forest containing redwoods growing in a narrow strip along the coast.

By the early 20th century, most of these forests had been cut down. Just north of the San Francisco Bay, one valley named Redwood Canyon remained uncut, mainly due to its relative inaccessibility.

This was noticed by U.S. Congressman William Kent. He and his wife, Elizabeth Thacher Kent, purchased 611 acres (247 ha) of land from the Tamalpais Land and Water Company for $45,000 with the goal of protecting the redwoods and the mountain above them.

In 1907, a water company in nearby Sausalito planned to dam Redwood Creek, thereby flooding the valley. When Kent objected to the plan, the water company threatened to use eminent domain and took him to court to attempt to force the project to move ahead. Kent sidestepped the water company's plot by donating 295 acres (119 ha) of the redwood forest to the federal government, thus bypassing the local courts.

On January 9, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt declared the land a National Monument, the first to be created from land donated by a private individual. The original suggested name of the monument was the Kent Monument but Kent insisted the monument be named after naturalist John Muir, whose environmental campaigns helped to establish the National Park system. President Roosevelt agreed, writing back:

MY DEAR MR. KENT: By George! you are right."

I find this so interesting so I thought I would include it here....

Here are some pics of the ferry ride over to Sausalito and Muir Woods

The Nutcracker!

First time at the ballet for both of us.

On Christmas Eve 1944, Willam Christensen launched a national holiday tradition with the premiere of Nutcracker, the first complete version of the ballet ever staged in the United States. The ballet is now performed over the Christmas period every year in San Francisco.

It was just delightful! The Nutcracker Ballet is based on the story "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice" written by E.T.A. Hoffman. Although what is seen on the stage today is different in detail from the original story, the basic plot remains the same; The story of a young German girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King with seven heads.

30th December

Napa Valley :-)

Wonderful, wonderful day exploring the Napa Valley! We visited 4 wineries (The Franciscan, V. Sattui, Whitehall Lane and the Andretti winery). Our first wine tasting was at 10 am and we didn't get back to San Francisco till about 6 pm so a lot of wine was consumed! Such an awesome day. Oh, and my name was pulled out of the raffle at the last winery so I scored a free bottle of wine - hooray!

We caught a ferry back to San Fran and spotted San Quentin State Prison on our way.

Who is the most famous inmate at San Quentin State Prison? Manson family leader Charles Manson tops the list. Manson has been transferred to many different prison facilities throughout his sentence. He famously filmed a 1987 interview with the “Today Show” during his time at San Quentin. The full interview footage wasn't seen by audiences until MSNBC aired “The Mind of Manson” in 2007.

Serial killer William Bonin also spent time at San Quentin State Prison. Bonin, known as the Freeway Killer, committed the rape, torture and murder of at least 21 boys and young men. He was executed at San Quentin by lethal injection in 1996. He was the first person to be executed in this manner in the history of California.

Fantastic NYE!

We headed out to the Castro district which was lots of fun and then headed down to the Mission District to take some more photos of the fabulous murals they have over there. Lunch was at Santaneca which we went to a couple of nights ago with Izaguire and Veronica. The food is phenomenal!
We then headed back into town to say goodbye to Izaguirre and Veronica. We've had such fun with them!

After that we headed home to have our own little party. We have such fun just the two of us.
Napa wine, phone calls home and music was the perfect way to ring in the New Year! We headed up to our rooftop just before midnight to watch the fireworks. Perfect ending to a perfect day and night!

Woke up feeling so excited - home in 17 days!

We headed to Alamo Square to take photos of the Painted Ladies - anyone remember Full House???
We then had a very relaxed night in watching Breaking Bad! We're up to the last season...

2nd Jan 2015

Couldn't think of a more perfect way to end our time in San Fran than biking through Golden Gate Park. We biked all the way through the park to Ocean Beach and back. The hills were tough but we did it!

San Francisco is AWESOME! Put it on your list if you ever visit the USA!

3rd Jan 2015

We're back in LA!

So good to see Lidia and Raul again!
We bummed around for most of the day, went out for dinner and then stayed up chatting for a bit.

Our niece Sandra is engaged! We found out this morning and called her tonight to give our congratulations! Congratulations Sandra and Rob! We ca't wait to get home and celebrate with you both!

Watched 2 movies before hitting the sack - The Imitation Game & Gone Girl - both fantastic although Yuri fell asleep half way through the first movie...

4th Jan

Woke up at lunch time today so I think it's going to be a very lazy day!

Once we got our act together and finally left the house, we hit the shops. Feels SO good to shop!

Los Angeles to San Francisco

(The City of Angels & The City of fog)

sunny 17 °C

Los Angeles here we come!

11th December

Just over 5 hrs to LA and we kept ourselves entertained by watching Breaking Bad - we've almost finished Season 3 now...

Lidia picked us up from the airport and took us to her place where we met Marie (her sister). We had dinner together and then Raul (Lidia's husband) got home from work and we had a good old chat before heading to bed - so good to catch up with them all and so kind of them to offer us a place to stay!

12th December

We got up a little late and had some breakfast before taking a walk around our hood. Van Nuys seems very nice.

I received a call from Visa Global to say they would be sending me a replacement card the next day (Saturday)! Wow that is such great service! I then checked my bank account to find the money that was stolen had been replaced. Thank you NAB!

We took a drive downtown in the evening and went for dinner at an El Salvadorean place called Jaragua. The food was pretty good - the company even better!

Dinner with the fam!

13th December

After my replacement card had been delivered, we headed to Downtown LA with Lidia and Marie. It was like being in Mexico! We bought a couple of things and then headed to the Fisherman's Outlet for lunch - yum!

Lidia dropped us off at Griffith park after that and we enjoyed a few hours there hiking up around the HOLLYWOOD sign and in the observatory which was so, so cool! Griffith Park is now my favourite place in LA. It's so beautiful! We watched a show in the planetarium which was great as we'd never been in one before!

Lidia and Raul picked us up from there and we headed to Wilshire Blvd to see some Christmas lights before heading out for some Chinese food which was yummy!

DSC_0085.jpg

14th December

Easy day today. Visited Costco (I bought jeans for $12) with Raul and then back home for a couple of drinks and a BBQ with the fam. So nice to just hang out with them.

C28C6F2B0B42A3C771B75C8D29088859.jpg

Heard about the siege in Sydney. So horrible and hope everyone gets out ok....

Watched a movie before hitting the sack.

15th December

Woke up to hear the horrible news that two hostages were killed in the siege. So sad.

We went out on our first adventure on our own today! Lidia and Raul have lent us a car (how nice are they?) We headed to Santa Monica and were possibly captured on camera for a new tv pilot they were filming there! We walked and walked and had lunch there before heading to Venice beach. Venice beach is unique. It's a little dirty and there are quite a lot of homeless people there, but it has character.
After that we went to Marina del Rey before heading to a shopping mall to grab some food and do some shopping. Good day!

16th December

Horrible day weather wise so we bummed around the house and did some washing before heading to the shops again to buy more stuff - love the shopping here!

San Francisco here we come!

17th December

We arrived to a rainy San Francisco that was already dark at 5 pm! Taxi to Richmond to find we are staying across the street from the Golden Gate Park - score! Our airbnb host wasn't able to meet us so we dug our key out of the dirt and entered a very cozy apartment! Did a little bit of research, posted some photos and watched a couple of shows before heading to bed.

18th December

We slept like logs and woke late morning. Brunch at the apartment before finally heading out at 1pm! No rain today!

We walked to through Richmond which is a very cool suburb. There are some great restaurants around! We found Vietnamese sandwiches (Banh Mi) which put BIG smiles in our faces. They were delicious!

90_C3158D3DC9299C43C60C842A8559DC9D.jpg

San Francisco is very hilly but oh so beautiful! We made our way to a MUNI ticket office to buy a bus/tram pass and then walked and walked some more!

Stopped at Safeway for dinner ingredients before heading back home. Yuri made a beautiful stir fry tonight!

We are now chilling in front of the heater watching Breaking Bad.

19th December

Alcatraz!

What an awful day weather wise but we still managed to have the best day! We navigated the bus system to make it to pier 33 easily enough and we joined hundreds of other people waiting for the ferry to Alcatraz.

We got some pretty good photos on the was over even though it was rainy and foggy. Seeing Alcatraz Island surrounded by fog made it even creepier!

Once there we picked up our audio tour and off we went! It was so interesting. We spent a few hours on the island before catching the ferry back.

Alcatraz!

We made a run for pier 39 once we got back to the mainland to try and avoid the rain but we were already soaked. We stopped at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co for lunch and we were both surprised that the food was so good, delicious in fact!

SanFrancisco is really pretty, even when it's cold and raining!

We then walked back to Market St to catch the bus home - what a fantastic day!

20th December

Another great day!

Late start. Brunch at home then spoke to Mum before heading out.

We walked A LOT today. We started at Market St then headed to Union Square then up to Chinatown, Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower, up Lombard Street (the crookedest st in the world), then up Hyde St to California St and we finally ended back up at Union Sq with very sore legs! There was a lot of up hill climbing today. The views we saw from Coit Tower and Lombard St were so amazing though so it was well worth it!

21st December

We spent today with Izaguirre who was Eric's best friend back in El Salvador! He's been giving us a lot of pointers about San Francisco and it was great to catch up with him!

I've been dying to try dim sum or yum cha here since I read about all the amazing places you can go to. We decided on Yank Sing because of the rave reviews and it did not disappoint, the food was amazing!

C3D29342ACFCA8A799A7FD57218FD4DF.jpg

After that we headed to the Ferry Building and the pier where we got some amazing views of the Bay Bridge. Izaguirre's wife Veronica came to meet us there.

180_photo_1__6_.jpgC3E13BBD0858E9920348B6839B08B964.jpgphoto_2__6_.jpg

Next stop as Fisherman's Wharf which is super cool! There is just SO much to do here!

C3EA59E60AAF388575D4CEDB3A3E2FEA.jpg

We then caught the train into 'La Mission' where Izaguirre and Veronica live. It's a very Latino neighbourhood with some very cool murals around the place. We walked to a Spanish restaurant called Esperpento for some delicious paella before calling it a night. Great day!

22nd December

Glorious day!
We caught the bus downtown to meet up with Tia Annie! She has been to Australia before so I had met her and it was so great to see her again! We had coffee and a chat before heading out for lunch. Yuri and Tia didn't stop gabbing away for a full 2 hrs!

Home after that to chill. We booked a couple of tours, had a couple of drinks, cooked some dinner and then watched a very disappointing Homeland finale...

23rd December

Golden Gate Bridge! Boy do our legs hurt today! So much walking in San Francisco.....
Our location in Richmond is awesome. We cross the road to catch the bus downtown, today we walked just a few blocks to catch the bus to the Golden Gate Bridge. The place was filled with tourists as it was a sunny day. I think what makes the Golden Gate so amazing is the views you get from there. New York, New York!

snow -1 °C

Crikey it's cold! Our winter jackets have been packed away in the bottom of our bags since we were in Argentina - that was 6 months ago!

What a COOL place New York City is though. Although it was cold, we had the most amazing 10 days here, wish we had planned to stay longer....

1st December

Long, long day for a 4 hr flight to Newark, New Jersey. We finally made it to the freezing cold weather and caught a cab to the apartment in Brooklyn ($120 - slightly more expensive than Mexico ;o)). The apartment is so, so nice! Spacious and cosy and we have a full kitchen and living room - it will do ;o). But it's COLD here! We haven't experienced cold like this the whole time we've been travelling. Lucky we bought thermals before we got here! Brrrr.

2nd December

We had the best nights sleep in our toasty apartment. It's even colder today than yesterday! We chilled outfor most of the day, went to the supermarket and booked flights to San Francisco (for mid Dec)!

3rd December

Very cold and raining but still so cool to be here. We walked and walked today! Times Square, Union Square, the Macy's Christmas windows - we stopped at the end of the day to have some delicious coffee and macaroons. By the time we left (4:30 pm) it was already dark - the sky was pitch black!

Times Square!

4th December

Not as cold (maybe 1 degree higher than yesterday) and the sun is shining!

We covered a lot of ground today (my feet hurt)!
We started by walking from Union Square to the Hudson River - beautiful views and we even spotted the Statue of Liberty! Next was High Line Park which is a public park made on an old railway track and runs from the Meatpacking District to Chelsea - very cool. This wasn't here the last time we visited.
Then we walked to the Rockefeller Center and saw the tree all lit up and even a proposal on the ice skating rink (she said yes). We spotted Radio City Music Hall and the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on our way there.
We had a delicious Szechuan dinner before heading to Madison Square Garden to watch the New York Knicks Vs. The Cleveland Cavaliers! Pretty good day!

5th December
It's so cold and rainy today so we took the chance to laze about. Checked out our neighbourhood and went to the grocery store - that's about it!

6th December
More laziness - we did absolutely nothing today and it was fabulous!

7th December
The sun is shining today!
We headed out for a day of sightseeing and ended up seeing Chicago The Musical. We stopped at the TKTS ticket booth at Times Square to see what they had available and 50% off tickets to Chicago sold us. It was an amazing show!

8th December
Another awesome day in NYC!
We walked over 15 kms today and clocked over 23,000 steps! I know this because I have an app and decided to turn it on today....
Union Square, SOHO, Little Italy, Chinatown, Financial District, Battery Park, Brooklyn Bridge (it was -1 degrees when we were walking over the bridge) and then finally back to Little Italy for dinner!

Brooklyn Bridge (a highlight)!

9th December
Awful day weather wise but we headed out anyway. We really wanted to get to Tom's Diner that features in Seinfeld. We made it and got a couple of shots but it was raining so hard that we literally just took photos and ran....

Tom's diner!
photo_2__11_.jpgphoto_4__9_.jpgphoto_4__10_.jpg

We stopped for lunch after that and then went to the bank only to find my account had been wiped... no money to withdraw....
I got home and called the bank, our money was withdrawn in Chicago yesterday.... Luckily we don't keep all of our funds in the main account or we'd be screwed right now. We will eventually get the money back but it's just annoying as they have put a block on my card. Could be a a lot worse though so need to stay positive and grateful.
These buggers are incredibly clever. They used a skimming device and then made a counterfeit copy of my card..... All that travel through Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and it happens in the USA...
Anyway after 1 hr on the phone with the bank, I then had to call Visa Global to try and get a temporary replacement card sent to me in the US....

10th December
Last day in New York - boo.
Even though it has been so, so cold, New York is amazing and we are going to miss it here. It will be nice not having to wear so many layers to leave the house though!

Awesome day out! We started at Central Park where it started to snow! Crazy right? We have been so lucky. I said to Yuri the other day that "if I'm going to be this cold, I want to see snow!" We also got a nice warm Pretzel while there - yum!
After Central Park we walked from 79th Street all the way to Union Square at 14th Street. It snowed lightly the whole time!
What did we see? 5th Avenue (Trump Towers, Empire State Building etc), Bryant Park winter market and the Flatiron Building.

What an amazing place New York is. Completely different to what we have experienced thus far on this trip but just as brilliant!
We just went up to our rooftop and it's covered in snow! Oh NYC, we will miss you.

Our Mexican journey is over (boo hoo)....

sunny 27 °C

TULUM continued.....

18th November

Akumal! Snorkeling and spotting sea turtles and sting-rays made for a pretty amazing day!
This place is only a half an hour drive from Tulum and it is amazing! We decided to be adventurous and go out snorkeling on our own (not as part of a tour). Within 5 minutes we spotted our first turtle peacefully chomping away on sea grass! We spotted a lot more turtles, sting-rays and lots of beautiful fish!

19th November
Chichén Itzá ruins and Ik Kil Cenote - out of this world!

WOW we had the most amazing day! We got up super early and drove about 200 kms to the Chichén Itzá ruins. Yuri has been talking about visiting this place for years so I am so happy that we finally made it! This is a large city built by the Mayans and boy was it impressive!

Ik Kil Cenote is just a short drive from Chichén Itzá and was equally as amazing. A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath.

20th November

Chill out day planning our NYC stay... We are going to be staying in Brooklyn in a gorgeous apartment all to ourselves and we bought tickets to go and see the New York Nicks v the Cleveland Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden - whoop whoop!
NYC is just a touch more expensive than Mexico ;o)

21st November

Happy Birthday Margaret!

Road trip today to Playa del Carmen and Cancun! We love getting out on the road. Yuri is always the driver and I'm the co-pilot. Playa del Carmen is only about an hour from Tulum. It's pretty cool and has a great vibe.

Playa del Carmen

Cancun is over the top. Resorts are lined along the beach which made it hard to see anything much. I can see the attraction, however the grandeur of it al doesn't appeal to us...

22nd November

PERFECT DAY at a little piece of paradise we have found called X'CACEL! We came here a few days ago and loved it so much we just had to come back! Why do we love it so much? It's untouched. There are no hotels or bars here. Not many people know about this place so it's not crowded. The sand is so soft and white and the water so clear. There is also some awesome snorkelling to be done here. So we pack up a foam esky filled with beers, water and some fruit and bring sandwiches and we are set for the day!
Ahhhhh...

Our paradise X'CACEL!

23rd November

Another glorious day in Tulum so we set off bright and early for Akumal (again). The last time we were there it was a little overcast and hard to see (but still amazing). Today was sunny and very clear and we had perfect views while snorkeling - perfect! We saw so many sea turtles this time!

After that we headed to the beach and took a boat tour to see the ruins from a different angle - amazing! We also got out and did some snorkelling. We were pretty far out but we got to see part of the second biggest reef in the world - WOW! It was so, so beautiful!

24th November

Chill out day catching up on shows...
Anyone watching Homeland????

25th November

Back to our spot at X'CACEL today! Ahhhhh perfection!

26th November

It's our last day in paradise which makes us so sad. I think Tulum is a little sad too because it has been raining non stop since last night...
Our tans are amazing and we've had such a relaxing time here (and eaten the most amazing seafood)!

27th November

Happy Birthday Sascha!

Long day.
Up early to drive to Cancun airport which took about 1.5 hrs. We dropped off the rental car and then checked in at the airport. Quick lunch then we boarded. Mexico City is freezing - certainly colder than Tulum!
We met up with Gigi & Javier so they could show us our apartment. We were so pleasantly surprised to find eggs, milk, cereal, OJ, biscuits and most importantly tequila waiting for us! This is why we love Mexico! We are living like locals for our last few days here.

28th November

Crazy day running around Mexico City. First stop was United Airlines then a little market for lunch. We then caught the bus to Buena Vista to do some shopping. We needed to get some winter gear for NYC as we are totally unprepared for the cold weather! We also bought another suitcase as we want to buy some last minute goodies from the market tomorrow! Back home for a couple of drinks and to make a couple of phone calls before heading out for some tacos. Tacos mmm yummy.

29th November

Crazy but good day.

We started off at the arts and crafts market which hurt our wallets but was fun. Everything is so beautiful here. We then took a walk to a taco cart selling 5 tacos for $2.50! Bargain right? They were so delicious!

22941E31B964E570CFC7E08B22B72E84.jpg90_229551C7A13112179E2EBB828929469F.jpg229675D8F436976C497CD6A57AC9823A.jpg

After that Yuri got a haircut while I called Mum and then we caught the bus to El Zocalo. The bus ride was nothing short of crazy and dangerous. There's approximately 22 million people in this city so everywhere you go is jam packed. The same goes for the public transport system. The "unofficial rule" is as long as the doors can close, we're all good. We were jammed right up against the front door of the bus and it felt like a sauna but hey, when in Mexico tight????
The centre was filled with people but it was so festive and lively!
We have often heard from locals that "anything is possible in Mexico", you can also buy anything on the streets - including eyebrow and lip waxing ladies. I saw it with my own eyes!
We ended the night at Salon Corona for beers, tacos and tortas - Yum!

30th November

Our last day in Mexico :-(. OMG we don't want to leave.

We spent our last day in Chapultapec park (after another crazy bus ride there). It was full of vendors and happy families enjoying the sunshine!

DSC_0065.jpg2301F7AD9CF956BD5713C2BDDD61270E.jpgDSC_0071.jpg270_DSC_0076.jpg23064FD6AEEEE0CA740F9289DF91D1FC.jpg

We aren't ready to say goodbye to Mexico but we are so grateful for the amazing time and memories we have created here. This country has everything and the people are SO, SO amazing! We have experienced so much here. We started off with Yuri's parents for 2 weeks where we spent time in Mexico City and visited Veracruz and spent an amazing time with Claudia, Andrea, Rocio and family! We then went to Cuba before embarking on our amazing bus journey through Mexico. Puebla, Oaxaca, San Cristobal de las Casas, Palenque and Tulum - WOW.
Ending the journey where we started in Mexico City seems fitting and we have been running around like headless chooks the last 3 days trying to soak it all in.

Thank you Mexico, you hold a very special place in our hearts.

Next stop - New York City baby!
